Uruguay

The overwhelming memories of Uruguay for me would be the friendliness of the people, the amazing BBQ´s and the abundance of ´vintage´cars!
We also had more extreme temperatures, our first night we spent at a thermal spa resort - Termas Del Dayman, we were camping and in our excitement rushed off to a spa resort to soak in the thermal pools (there were also some at camp), a recipe for tired muscles, a brief visit to sauna and endless hot water showers. Back at camp we were treated to a gastronomical BBQ by our Uruguayan driver Alfonso and his cousin, mother and nephew. An array of ribs, sausages (blood, offal, cheese, veggie), fish, chicken and baked potatoes, accompanied by chimichurri - secret recipe of olive oil, chilli, garlic, salt, vinegar, bayleaf, etc - overshadows the traditional SA BBQ!! (Sorry guys!)
We had several memorable moments in the short time we had in Uruguay, including camping on an island on a river in Mercedes over Independence day celebrations - the whole town seemed to be out celebrating along Rambla (river road) cruising in cars or on motorbikes and relaxing on sidewalks with flask in one hand and mate cup in the other - quite civilised really!
A favourite spot was Colonia, a Unesco Heritage spot, recognised for the preservation of the the old town. We had a great cycling day from Carmelo to Colonia on undulating terrain with horses and cattle pastures turning to tree lined roads, golf course, polo club and vineyards - a stark (rather nice) contrast to rural farmland we had been experiencing. The day was noted for the race from 20km to 40km, with great conditions - rolling hills and tailwinds, and added excitement to the day!
Colonia is quite charming, beautiful architecture, superb restaurants and some of the best ice cream we have tasted thus far!
